Evolution of Casual Games
Casual games are the games that are designed for an average gamer or computer user, they feature a very short learning curve, have very basic rules and do not require much strategy, anybody should be able to enjoy casual games within minutes of launch.
Since the first days of Windows operating system top casual games were Solitaire, Minesweeper and Tetris like games which regardless of their simplicity cost worldwide economy millions of dollars in office productivity due to their addicting nature.
Today there are several major casual game developers such as Big Fish Games, Relexive, iWin, RealArcade and few other publishers who deserve most credit for great success of the casual games. Recently casual games have had great success and have become a multi billion dollar industry and due to that fact many game publishers are joining the party and releasing more and more games, thus resulting in new game genres developing. The most recent one being Chicken Games. And yes we are not kidding Chickens have recently been very prevalent on the Casual Gaming scene.

A Game to Teach Table Manners – MannerIsms :
Has anyone ever imagined that there can be a game for teaching table manners to children at mealtimes so that they can display better social etiquettes at parties and follow the same at home too. Well for people who havenot come across it before, I am sure they will be astonished and excited to know that such a game exists in the gaming world. The game has got the name MannerIsms. In fact, the game is for the whole family, but more so for children and children enjoy it too while learning the basic culture on the table during mealtimes.
So, how did the game come into being ? Roz Heintzman, a woman from Toronto observed one night in early 2004 when she was at her friend Gillian Deacon’s house for a dinner that her friend has a unique way of teaching her children manners – in which she asks her kids to take manners out of an envelope and follow them, one for each night. This observation led to the inspiration for MannerIsms. Roz Heintzman alongwith entrepreneur Carolyn Hynland (also from Toronto), started looking to fill a gap in the market for all things relating to manners – specifically manners and children. After some informal market research, a business plan was formulated and, with the help of friends and family, the game MannerIsms came to life.
How is the game played ? One box of MannerIsms comes with twenty-five cards, each bearing one code of conduct. Each is sweet, lyrical, and easy to remember, such as “Food to mouth, not mouth to food. In this way, you won’t seem rude.”. Another is "Mabel, Mabel if you're able, keep your elbows off the table!". It is played over a series of nights and each night, children in your family draw a new card from the stack and spend the meal perfecting it. Depending on the age and number of children playing, MannerIsms provides several options for rewarding good manners. And you can further tailor the game to your family.
In the game, suppose your kid(s) are motivated by reward, try affixing stickers to the manners cards successfully accomplished. If your children like competition between them, you can devise rewards, like having the child who most often used that night's manner pick the card for the next night. You can also play cumulatively, having your child(ren) keep watch for previous night's manners and keeping score on a sheet of paper.
The game takes the nagging out of teaching table manners. It's also a reminder to parents to check their own behaviour. Some women admit to buying the game as much for their husbands. Its quite enjoyable for kids too to catch their parents in a mistake.
The game creation team always strives to improve it by accepting suggestions such as if there are other manners that people would like to see included, or if your family has come up with a new way of scoring or tracking your childrens' progress.

A brief history of Tetris
Tetris was the first computer game that involved falling tetromino pieces that the game player must align in order to create an unbroken line which subsequently disappears in order to free up more game play space. If the player is unable to make an unbroken line, the game play space quickly gets crowded until the point where no more space is available and the game is over.
The game of Tetris was first programmed in 1985 in the former Soviet Union by Alexey Pazhitnov. It ran on a machine called an Electronica 60 but was quickly ported to run on an IBM PC in the same month of its initial release. One month later and the game had been ported for use on the Apple II and the Commodore 64 by a programming team in Hungary.
The game quickly saw interest from a software house in the UK, Andromeda, who released it in the UK and USA in 1986 although the original programmer Pazhitnov had not agreed to any sale or licensing agreement. Nonetheless, Anromeda managed to copyright licensing for the game and marketed Tetris as ‘The first game from behind the iron curtain’. Tetris was an instant smash hit and had thousands of people hooked.
A new company, ELORG, took up negotiations on behalf of Pazhitnov and eventually the licensing rights were granted to Nintendo in 1989 for a sum of between 3 and 5 million dollars. Nintendo quickly exerted their corporate strength and forbid any other company to market the game that Andromeda had given license to, including Atari. However, Tetris had become the biggest selling game on all formats at that time.
Today Tetris is still hugely popular, with versions running on all formats, and still managing to get people hooked through its simple yet addictive game play.
