The Sims Online Is Now Free, And You Can Earn Money Playing It!

The Sims Online has now become EA Land, and with the change of name have come a number of alterations to the basic structure of the game, which are drawing in new players by the droves. Free play; custom content; ownable stores; Paypal-enabled exchange of Simoleons for actual money; the list goes on, and the game gets better every week. Here's a review of some of the changes, and how you can use them to earn money:

Free Play

Not much explanation necessary here. The 14-day trial of old has now been extended to permanent free play, with a few limitations. One of the most noteworthy of these is that free players will only be able to cash-out more money than they cashed in; in other words, they can't actually make any money from the game until they are subscribers. The only way to earn money in-game is to team up with a full subscriber, and get them to pay you. Your free play account is easily upgradeable to full member, so once you're earning more cash in-game than the $9.99 a month it costs to subscribe, it's time to upgrade.

Custom Content

At last! The Sims Online has allowed users to create custom content. Apart from adding variety and interest, this is a great way for players to earn money in the game, and real life. To create custom content you can either modify an existing Sims object, start completely from scratch, or use a photograph or existing image as a basis for your new Sims object. There are plenty of tutorials available to show you how to get started, and you'll be surprised how easy it is to do once you've had a little practice.

Player to Player Commerce

With the advent of custom content, players are now able to sell items that they've made to other players. This system has already worked extremely well in Second Life, and now that it's come to the online version of the best selling game ever, a colossal marketplace is set to develop. While the creation of these custom products might be easy for those of us who are used to the internet and basic graphic programs, for a lot of people these are difficult technology, and they are exactly the sort of people who play the Sims, and nothing else. If you can edit images then you can build content, and there is a business opportunity for you in the Sims Online world -- just remember not to forget it's about fun.

Cash-Out

Cashing-in and cashing-out are EA speak for turning your dollars into Simoleons (cashing in) and converting them (plus more) back to dollars (cashing out). Both transactions will be performed through Paypal, so your money should be safe. This means that EA Land is now a place where you can earn money without even leaving your house.

Cheats

There are a few sites around still offering (legal) cheats for the Sims Online, including bots who continually work to earn you money. Check out the link below for details.

At last, it seems, EA have finally implemented the changes that players have been crying out for since the Sims Online first hit our screens, pushing it out of mediocrity and into the big-money realms of games such as Second Life and WOW. Considering that Sims 1 and 2 are the top-selling games of all time, attracting millions of players who otherwise wouldn't even touch a computer, the Sims Online could well be set to herald in a new era of online gaming. Keep watching.

The Right Amount Of Computer Time

In a country that settles each night in front of the television, it just seems strange that more and more people are finding the allure of the computer screen sometimes more important. There is no doubt that children do as their parents do. They enjoy exploring the vast world of the Internet. They are excited to get that new computer game. But, how much time in front of the computer screen is the right amount of time?

There is no doubt going to be a number of people that come out and say that children are spending far too much time in front of the computer. They may end up telling us that their eyes will go back or something. Regardless of what they will say, we know now that it is important to limit the amount of time children use the computer. We know this because we know that it just makes sense that children who play on the computer too much loose the physical aspects of life along with the elements of pretend play that actually teach them quite a bit.

As parents, it is up to us to limit what the child is doing. It is up to us to provide for them something worthwhile to do while they are on the web as well. In this, we mean that you, Mom or Dad, need to commit to knowing which games they are playing and which websites they plan to visit. Here's a great way to limit what they are actually doing.

Instead of allowing them to surf and end up on some bad website out there, go ahead and download a game or two for them. Games that are available on the web are fun, but when the parent gets to do the picking, they can be fun and educational at the same time. Does your child need math help? Then go ahead and give them a fun math game that teaches what they need in an easy to get along with manner. This can be done for a number of subjects like spelling, science, history and language. By giving them a computer game like these, they can make their computer time, well, worth it in your eyes.

You would be surprised by how many parents simply say, "Yes, you can play on the internet." Many of them do not know what their child is doing let alone know that he or she is playing an educational game! Yeah right! Most kids are going to find and play a game that interests them with flashing colors and graphics. That doesn't mean that they won't like games that don't provide this element. But, the websites they tend to visit are full of advertisements that lure them in. Your job is to point them in the right direction.

So, back to our question; how much is the right amount of time for computer time for your child? Well, inside that question is the word, "your" and that means that it is at your discretion that you should consider their need. Balance their day with physical, emotional, pretend and all those other important educational elements then add in a little time for computer play. Believe it or not, they are building skills that they will need later in life too.

Sony PSP

The ultimate handheld multimedia machine is what I call Sony’s latest gaming console. It is the best thing Sony has ever come up with so far. You can do almost anything with it!

Officially marketed as a gaming console, there is much more to it than that. For one thing, you can download your favorite music files onto the memory stick and voila, you have a portable music player! It also makes use of a new storage device called the UMD. It looks like a CD but is much smaller. Aside from games, you can get music videos and movies. With its wide high resolution screen, you can now watch your favorite movies anywhere, anytime you want to. If you are a high tech bookworm like me, then you will love the PSP even more. You can download e-books from the internet and put them on the PSP as JPEG files and read the latest novels on the go! Do you want to carry precious memories around anywhere you go? Convert your pictures into digital format and transfer them onto the memory stick. Now you can have hundreds of pictures at your fingertips!

The relatively large screen size makes for easy viewing of almost any format you use. During game play, the details will just astound you. Watching a movie is like watching it on DVD. You can adjust the contrast so as to suit your viewing preferences.

The memory stick’s storage capacity might give you a bit of a headache, though. There are large capacity memory sticks available but many of them are a bit pricey. However, I would say that it’s worth it.

It would be a good idea to purchase the headphones that come as an accessory. The built-in speakers of the PSP can be a bit disappointing. They just don’t give you the best experience when playing a game, watching a movie, or listening to music. The headphones give a much better sound quality.

Another drawback is that there doesn’t seem to be enough good games for the console yet. Compared to other handheld gaming consoles, the Sony PSP lags behind when it comes to the release of new games. The UMD disks are quite expensive as well.

Then again, I am sure you will be able to find something to do with your PSP while waiting for the next game or movie to come out.

Rumors About PS3 Games Playstation 3 And Their Justifications

The much awaited release of the PS3 Games and the new PlayStation console is fast approaching and is just months from meeting the deadline. It is very much anticipated by fans and consumers because of the promising press releases about its performance and new innovations. However, there are rumors about the upcoming PS3 Games and the console itself that are somewhat misleading. It is even making the market somewhat apprehensive of their anticipation.

Among these are rumors that PS3 Games would not be allowed to be re-sold by consumers. According to sources, Sony is planning to acquire a licensing system that would hinder buyers from owning the software of the game itself. This would mean that a purchase of a particular game would only mean that the buyer is purchasing for a right to play the game – not own it. This may strike people as somewhat infrin... paste your article here... ging, but Sony has quite a number of good reasons for doing so, if ever they really do.

Although Sony has not yet released any official comment about the matter, they have made sentiments that this licensing agreement would send a message to consumers that PS3 Games are worth the value that they are paying for. But as of now, this has yet to be finalized and waited upon.

Another of the issues regarding the release of the PS3 game console is the retail price that Sony wishes to release the unit at. Statistics show that game consoles that have been priced in the past at over $400, did not do so well in the market as those that were priced lower. This is one of the issues about the upcoming release that would prove to be definitive of the game consoles success, ergo the PS3 Games themselves.

However, it would not be surprising at all that Sony has set a great deal of value to its latest model of the PlayStation. There are indeed a lot of technological innovations incorporated into this latest model of the PlayStation series. In addition to that, Sony extended this advancement of gaming technology to the PS3 Games itself.

PS3 Games would be created using Blue Ray discs that would enable it to be able to perform much better because of the increase in storage capacity of the disc itself. In addition to that, Sony has worked alongside NVIDIA to provide a custom graphics processing unit (GPU) which would work together with Sony's gaming technology advances to be able to provide gamers with the astounding gaming experience they had been promising.

Current rumors that PS3 Games and the console itself would most probably come at a higher price than its current competitors, is due to the fact that they have made certain that consumers would definitely be getting what they actually paid for.

Whatever the rumors about the licensing of PS3 Games and the high cost of the PlayStation game console, consumers would simply wait and see for what is going to happen and what they have to offer, once the release day comes. And with all the promising features about the PS3 Games and the console, it has been proven that consumers are actually willing to pay more for something that would really meet their standards.

Rent Video Games- Save Yourself Time and Money

The ability to rent video games from home without leaving the house has always been a true dream of mine. Not only does renting video games online keep you busy, but it can be very satisfying knowing you can rent as many titles as you want at anytime and generally receive them within a day or two.

Here are some Video Game Rental Statistics you might find interesting:
•"U.S. consumers spent $633.6 million renting video games in 2001, and a record-breaking $6 billion buying video game software (including PC software)."

But why are people renting video games instead of buying? I guess I can’t say gamers are not buying video games.
“The U.S. computer and video game software sales grew four percent in
2004 to $7.3 billion -- a more than doubling of industry software.”

But why rent games? I would estimate that people rent for 4 primary reasons.
1.The convenience
2.Its cheaper
3.Able to test games
4.Time sensitive

Convenience is truly a luxury worth having these days. People are looking for ways to save time and effort. Everything these days has to be fast and easy. Online video game rental companies provide that and much more. First of all and most important they deliver the game right to your front door. No more wasting your gas going to your favorite rental store, only to find out that the game you wanted is no longer available and won’t be available until you make that drive again. Gas is too expensive these day, who wants to spend all that money driving to a video store when you can easily accomplish the same task on your home computer?

Second of all it’s simple alot cheaper. The average video store charges from $4.00 to $6.00 dollars per video game rental. That could get expensive, specially if you’re renting numerous titles per week. Most of the well known game rental clubs like GameFly, Gottaplay, Intelliflix and RentZero only charge $12.95 to $19.95 per month for unlimited video game rental. So let’s say you rent 2 titles per week at the local video store. That equal around $30.00 dollars per month compared to $12 to $13 dollars per month with the online alternative. This is a large savings at the end of the month.

Now here is the greatest part. Have you ever purchased a video game and just hated it. You can’t just return the game, you’re stuck or you have to exchange it in for store credit. So you just have to suck it up and move on to the next game, which might not live up to your standards. Renting video games online gives you the chance to test the game first before you purchase. The companies will even allow you to purchase the games at discount rates and just keep the game if you enjoy it that much.

You can keep the games as long at you like just pay the monthly fee. If you want to play 6 to 7 games a month or more you can just pay the one time monthly fee and be done with it. You don’t even have to pay for postage. That’s a deal that I can get use to.

PsP Movie Downloads - Review

PsP handhelds are one of the newest and most fun ways to play games, watch movies and listen to music. PsP movie downloads are just some things that you can do on your psp besides just games. PsP movie downloads is a fun and easy.

There are many places on the net were one can find psp movie downloads and psp music downloads. Some sites have you pay per song or movie basis and sometimes charge up to a couple dollars for each download. Other sites require a membership and a monthly fee were user share files. This method sometimes can be frustrating when you are in the middle of a download and the user signs off before the download is complete.

I prefer to use sites that have a onetime membership for psp music, psp movies, psp games and psp software downloads. The best sites have their databases jammed pack with over a million songs, movies, games, and software available for downloading. Some of these sites have no limit to the amount of downloads you do per day.

There are some sites were the database does not have quality psp music and psp movie downloads and they might be very slow to download. I have placed a link at the top of this site for a one that has quality psp movie downloads, psp music, psp games and software downloads. You may want to check it out.

Once you have downloaded some psp movies, psp music and games you can take them anywhere you go. This is great when you have places to go or have long travel times to get somewhere. It really helps to pass the time away, while your having fun either listening to psp music or watching a psp movie or just playing a new game. There are so many games available you should never run out of games to play music to listen to and movies to watch.

Make sure that what ever site you choose either comes with a money back guarantee in case your not satisfied with their database of music songs, movies, games and software. I have been using the above site for over three months and never had the need to ask for my money back. I now have so many psp movie downloads, psp music and games downloaded that I often find it hard to decide which game to play, song to listen to, or movie to watch. If you’re wise and make the right choice you will be having fun all day long with your psp.

PsP Downloads – Review PsP Blender

PsP downloads are a great way to get new games for your psp hand held. You can get psp game downloads loads from many different websites. Most of these sites include psp music downloads, psp movie downloads and psp software downloads. Many of the databases are different from one site to another. Some sites offer a wide variety of different choices.

One thing I consider when choosing a site for psp downloads is the ease of the download. The amount of time the download takes is another import aspect. This can be different from site to site. I have found that psp blender is one of the most popular sites that my friends are using. The download time is quick and they make it very easy to download the psp games, psp music and psp downloads software.

I think that by now I have tried almost every site on the web and still psp blender ranks number one for my friends and I. There are quite a few sites that do offer a one time unlimited membership for under fifty dollars. This is a great way to get unlimited psp downloads without having to pay for new games, music and movies over and over again.

PsP Blender offers their site with a one-time membership fee for fewer than forty dollars. This is a great deal. Remember you usually get what you pay for from one site to another. I have tried other sites charging the same fees for less quality and quantity of psp downloads.

When you have a wide variety of choice with psp music, psp movies, games, and psp downloads it will be like have a new psp in your hand every day. You will never get board playing the same thing over and over again.

One advantage to this is if you choose a game that sounds good and exciting and then you find it is a boring game you can just go back and try another. If you went to the store and bought one you would be stuck with that game and then have to buy another. It is truly great to have a choice and availability of so many games at your fingertips.

If you have already chosen a site to get your psp downloads that your net very satisfied with I would strongly recommend you try psp blender. You check their site out by clicking on the link at the top of my website. I know you will find continuous fun and great psp downloads by choosing psp blender.

I will continue to try out new sites as they come online. When I see a site that is worthwhile I will post a review on it. So come back from time to time to see what is new.

Power Behind The Xbox360

Although Microsoft's Xbox was able to sell millions and millions of units worldwide, it was still considerably outsold by its competitor, Sony's PlayStation. In this day, wherein another revolution in video and gaming technology is at hand, the Xbox360 is more promising than ever.

What difference does the Xbox360 hold against its predecessor? Well, just like all gaming consoles, it is basically a computer that is designed to run video game programs. The difference is that they focus specifically on this function alone.

So how does the latest model from Microsoft differ from any other gaming console. As was mentioned earlier, the Xbox360 is a computer designed for playing video games. But aside from this, it was also designed to perform as a complete stand-alone entertainment system. To break it down, this new console can allow users to connect via a network, it can copy, stream, and download all sorts of media. This would, of course include in its arsenal, the ability to download and play HD movies, audio, as well as digital photos and games.

Now, since we know that all gaming consoles are simply computers designed for playing video games, let us take a look at the heart of all computers – the CPU. Just the same, video game consoles have a processor that would, of course, 'process' all the information being fed into the system. You could think of it as similar to a car's engine – it is the one that powers every function of the whole system. The latest innovation in the Xbox360 is that, they “modified the engine” to be able to deliver optimum performance for players.

Traditionally, CPUs process information via a single path. The more technical term for this is a thread. Now what the latest edition of the Xbox is bragging about is that under its hood, is a processor, or a core, that is able to process two threads simultaneously. This means that all the information that is being fed into it, is processed more effectively and efficiently because the “brain” is “multi-tasking”. Meaning, information about sound could be processed via one path, the other for the video graphics, etc. If you've ever noticed, past video games would either pause a bit or stutter occasionally. This is because the system is being bombarded by too much information, and it takes time for their 'brains' to be able to cope with the demands.

In addition to this, Microsoft has incorporated with this technology, a multi-core system that allows them to integrate more than one processor into a single chip. This is by far the latest innovation by hardware manufacturers – and yes, Microsoft has included it in their new Xbox game console. Having the ability to perform multiple tasks at the same time, it allows the game developers to come with strategies on how to maximize the potential of the machine, to deliver optimum performance.

This is the heart of why the Xbox has evolved to become even more powerful. There are a lot of other features about the new Xbox360 that definitely boosts its performance. But the heart of all of this, is of course the core that runs everything in it.

The game allows you to choose from two game modes: Freedom Fishing and Tournament.

In Freedom Fishing, you choose the location, time period, and type of fish you wish to catch. This mode is for players who want to practice their skills or to simply play a quick game.

The realistic elements of the game - from the detail of the fish to the clarity of the water and the variety of plant life - will amaze you. The Rapala brand not only adds its gear for use in the game, but also its expertise on the sport. A professional fishing guide accompanies your character in the boat, providing helpful hints and humor along the way.

With its high-quality graphics and lifelike nature, it's no wonder outdoor enthusiasts can feel right at home playing this game. In the words of Mark Meadows, vice president of marketing for Activision Value Publishing, "Any more realistic and you would have to wear hip waders."

Online Gaming – The Basics

The popularity of digital gaming be it tetris, super Mario, ping pong and other flash based games or massively multiplayer online role-playing games that can be played for free knows no bounds, either in terms of age or gender.
It is equally popular with youths, teenagers, women, men, children and old people. While younger ones play it just because they are young and anything offering them some entertainment attracts them, older people say they play games as it alleviates loneliness and puts them in contact with others.
Statistics reveal that 41% of gamers are women and more than 43 % gamers are aged 25-49. The growth potential on online gaming is tremendous. According to prestigious research firm IDC, online gaming is set to touch a whopping 256 million users by 2008.
Types of Games
Games played on digital media can be of two types, stored games and online games. While stored games are played on consoles, online games are played on a computer using either a broadband or dial up Internet connection. However, consoles with Internet capabilities are now in the market.

Let’s see why digital gaming is getting so popular. Firstly, it captures the imagination of the players and makes use of all the senses: sight, sound, as well as touch. Many games need the use of intelligence as well as strategy. Complex graphics, colors, high quality virtual realities are all there to hold you on your seat and keep playing. Multi-player gaming takes the interest to the next level where challenges as well as new horizons are there to be conquered.
Online games are available to be played
• Using e-mail.
• On a browser window by using a web address.
• Using Internet Relay Chat, Telenet, MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) client, or a Web based forum.
• With or against one another using stand-alone software.
System requirements

Following are must to enjoy an online game:
• A reliable Internet connection.
• A personal computer or game console.
• Selected software required by specific games.
One can play simple tetris, super Mario, online ping pong and other flash based games or massively multiplayer online role-playing games for free. The last category is simulation games – these imitate real-life situations and cover aspects like combat, city planning, strategies, as well as flight simulation.

Optimize your system

For serious gaming, the computer performance must be optimized. Following steps can be taken to do that:
• Do run the disk defragmenter at least once a month.
• Correct folder and file errors by using scandisk once a week for trouble free performance.
• Clear your hard drives of Internet files, temporary files, as well as files in the trash/recycle bin. Clear the cache and uninstall programs that are not in everyday use. The aim is to clear precious cache and RAM space.
• Keep updating the operating system software.
• Download any new security patches.
• Keep video drivers updated.
• Make use of a back up system to clear space on the hard drive.
• Get rid of any spyware you have inherited from websites.
• To avoid games from slowing down, minimize number of programs running while you are playing a graphic intensive game.
• Run an anti-virus program regularly but disable it when you are loading/playing games. Antivirus programs slow down games.
The Internet allows gamers to compete with people across oceans, on the other side of the world and anywhere on the earth. Some use PCs while others use consoles. What you would like to use depends on your personal choice and issues like costs and so on.

Online games started long ago

When did the Internet game scene first start? Well not in the early 1990s when mainstream America started to get Internet connectivity in their homes at an amazingly slow dial up speed. Actually, Internet games started almost forty years ago in the late 1960s according to most games fanatics. And, not unlike most great creations, the game field really began to take off in educational institutions across America. Some of the first colleges to introduce games to the world were MIT and the University of Illinois.

A system known as Plato ran games that people could play that were developed for its capacity. These games of course became widely popular amongst students, ate tons of computer resources as usual, got a slap by the administration, and spawned a truly wild game craze. Other games were developed for the Plato system. Some of these games were multiplayer and some were not. Great games like Avatar and Aircraft, and early flight simulators were introduced to the world on Plato. Some trekkie type games were also developed on this early multi player capable platform.

Some other great game developments happened at an educational institution across the pond, in England, at Essex University, throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s. The most popular gaming phenomenon that came out of Essex was a Multi User Dungeon (Mud). People at the University loved this game, and its popularity began to spread across the world as users gained access to the source code and started sharing the application with every gamer they knew. Free gaming owes a lot to this wonderful early program.

In the early 1980s, corporations started to the see the possibilities of getting every teenager in the world addicted to their products. A corporation by the name of Kesmai developed games for Compuserve and together they began serving up great product like Islands of Kesmai and Megawars 1. A user basically had to pay by the hour to play some of these early games, and Compuserve was having a blast getting paid some pretty good rates exceeding ten dollars an hour for game play.

In the 1980s, after the success of Kesmai and Compuserve, the gaming industry was beginning to really take off. Companies like General Electric and Quantum Computer were starting to offer monthly subscription fees to access their gaming nirvana. Kesmai at this point really began to elevate the gaming scene when they began introducing the gaming community to Air Warrior. The company also brought gamers Stellar Warrior and Stellar Emperor. Quantaum introduced Rabbit Jack’s casino at this time.

The late eighties saw the introduction of the AppleLink by Quantum for Apple II computer users, and parents everywhere started screaming at their kids to get away from the games. And the parents were of course right, except if you went to go work in the gaming industry, and then you probably made more than your parents.

Online Games: You Think, You Decide

You may have heard of several negative opinions about online games as well as console games. Whether you play games on your computer or in any kind of console, both are sure to be addictive. You probably have heard of kids spending too much time in front of the computer at the expense of school and family responsibilities. You cannot deny the fact that whenever you start playing, you can’t get off your seat or take your eyes away from the monitor. You might even forget that your phone is ringing or someone outside is waiting for you to be done. But hey, playing online games is not all that bad.

Contrary to what most people perceive, games played either in Xbox or Play Station have some advantages to entertain kids and adults. Online games in general are fun. The joy was in the games as well as the group interaction. Today with many families opting for a single child, free online games are a boon for that child and the parents.

Imagine parents worrying about their child- who will play with our child? Will he/she never play group games on board that we enjoyed so much in our childhood? Will, my kid never know the joy of the board games? Please stop worrying about that. Computer is there as a friend to play game with your child. Yes, I agree that it may not be same as playing in a group of children, but we cannot have our cake and eat it too

Online Games - Should Parents Worry Or Rejoice?

Parents have always been worried about Internet and their children. Till now the main worry was the adult websites. Now online games are becoming a worry. Should parents worry about the effect of online games on their children? Let me discuss this with you.

Online games or adult websites-given a choice, as a parent what do you want tour child to surf? An adult website or play free online games? The answer is obvious. Am I correct? Till now all the good thinking parents were worried about how to take their children away from adult websites. Free online games give you that tool. Why look at free online games with apprehension? Why not look at them with joy and think that now my child will play games and not visit adult websites.

Selecting free online games- sit with your child on the computer. Download few free games and play them with your children. Watch for few factors such as the violence in the game, the addictive capacity of the game and other such factors that may worry you. Select games that help your child enhance his/her mental ability and response.

In my opinion, parents should rejoice with free online games. Right game can lure your children away from everything that you do not want them to visit. Good free online games help develop quick response and decision taking ability. Rather than looking at the darker side of the free online games, use them to take your children away from adult content.

Online Games - Play With Your Children To Stop Worrying

Regular news reports and some stray studies suggest that some online games are affecting children. Parents are worried and blame the gaming industry. This approach is similar to blame the alcohol industry if your child starts drinking or blame the tobacco industry if your child becomes a smoker. What about parental responsibility? If your child attends the best of schools and colleges and does not manage to learn, is the school solely responsible? It is becoming easy for parents to blame all outside effects that can trouble their children. Same is happening with online games. The solution lies in taking your responsibility.

Talking about online games, the varieties are many and the levels at which the games can be played are also many. As apparent, play the game with your child for some days in the beginning. Watch his/her reaction while playing the online game. Find out the violence of the game. Find out if the online game can benefit your child. Many online games can sharpen your childs skill. Rather than blaming something that your child will continue with, take responsibility and help your child learn from that. Your children will also love your togetherness. You will also spend some quality time with your children while playing online game with them..

Todays parents are becoming so busy that they have very less time for their children. Once the child stops getting parental love and affection the child tries getting joy with other activities. Society does not produce bullies for no reason. Your children are dependent on you for all their emotional support and guidance. Please give it to them. Please join them in doing what they love. Trying to order and ask them to stop will not serve your responsibility. A responsible parent has to go much beyond that. Join them and play the online games they love to play. You can easily control the time period for which they play online games and have peace of mind.

Film is still a relative newcomer in the pantheon of fine arts

While motion picture films have been around for more than a century, film is still a relative newcomer in the pantheon of fine arts. In the 1950s, when television became widely available, industry analysts predicted the demise of local movie theaters. Despite competition from television's increasing technological sophistication over the 1960s and 1970s, such as the development of color television and large screens, motion picture cinemas continued. In the 1980s, when the widespread availability of inexpensive videocassette recorders enabled people to select films for home viewing, industry analysts again wrongly predicted the death of the local cinemas.

In the 1990s and 2000s the development of digital DVD players, home theater amplification systems with surround sound and subwoofers, and large LCD or plasma screens enabled people to select and view films at home with greatly improved audio and visual reproduction. These new technologies provided audio and visual that in the past only local cinemas had been able to provide: a large, clear widescreen presentation of a film with a full-range, high-quality multi-speaker sound system. Once again industry analysts predicted the demise of the local cinema. Local cinemas will be changing in the 2000s and moving towards digital screens, a new approach which will allow for easier and quicker distribution of films (via satellite or hard disks), a development which may give local theaters a reprieve from their predicted demise.

The cinema now faces a new challenge from home video by the likes of a new DVD format Blu-ray, which can provide full HD 1080p video playback at near cinema quality. Video formats are gradually catching up with the resolutions and quality that film offers, 1080p in Blu-ray offers a pixel resolution of 1920?1080 a leap from the DVD offering of 720?480 and the paltry 330?480 offered by the first home video standard VHS. The maximum resolutions that film currently offers are 2485?2970 or 1420?3390, UHD, a future digital video format, will offer a massive resolution of 7680?4320, surpassing all current film resolutions. The only viable competitor to these new innovations is IMAX which can play film content at an extreme 10000?7000 resolution.

Despite the rise of all new technologies, the development of the home video market and a surge of online piracy, 2007 was a record year in film that showed the highest ever box-office grosses. Many expected film to suffer as a result of the effects listed above but it has flourished, strengthening film studio expectations for the future.

Film criticism is the analysis and evaluation of films

Film criticism is the analysis and evaluation of films. In general, these works can be divided into two categories: academic criticism by film scholars and journalistic film criticism that appears regularly in newspapers and other media.

Film critics working for newspapers, magazines, and broadcast media mainly review new releases. Normally they only see any given film once and have only a day or two to formulate opinions. Despite this, critics have an important impact on films, especially those of certain genres. Mass marketed action, horror, and comedy films tend not to be greatly affected by a critic's overall judgment of a film. The plot summary and description of a film that makes up the majority of any film review can still have an important impact on whether people decide to see a film. For prestige films such as most dramas, the influence of reviews is extremely important. Poor reviews will often doom a film to obscurity and financial loss.

The impact of a reviewer on a given film's box office performance is a matter of debate. Some claim that movie marketing is now so intense and well financed that reviewers cannot make an impact against it. However, the cataclysmic failure of some heavily-promoted movies which were harshly reviewed, as well as the unexpected success of critically praised independent movies indicates that extreme critical reactions can have considerable influence. Others note that positive film reviews have been shown to spark interest in little-known films. Conversely, there have been several films in which film companies have so little confidence that they refuse to give reviewers an advanced viewing to avoid widespread panning of the film. However, this usually backfires as reviewers are wise to the tactic and warn the public that the film may not be worth seeing and the films often do poorly as a result.

It is argued that journalist film critics should only be known as film reviewers, and true film critics are those who take a more academic approach to films. This line of work is more often known as film theory or film studies. These film critics attempt to come to understand how film and filming techniques work, and what effect they have on people. Rather than having their works published in newspapers or appear on television, their articles are published in scholarly journals, or sometimes in up-market magazines. They also tend to be affiliated with colleges or universities.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (DVD)

One of a handful of films which epitomizes the 1980s decade, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off captured the imagination of high school kids all across America as they dreamt of mimicking the title character’s ability to manipulate the authority figures in his life. Written and directed by John Hughes, the brains behind The Breakfast Club (1985) and numerous other 1980’s cult classics, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off launched Matthew Broderick’s acting career into another dimension. In fact, Broderick garnered a Golden Globe nomination for his outstanding performance. It’s a nomination more than worthy of mention, because it’s the strength of the Ferris Bueller character that made this film such a smash hit.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off follows a day in the life of high school senior Ferris Bueller. Nearing graduation, he’s intent on living his life to the fullest (although preferably outside the confines of school). So Ferris takes a planned day of vacation with his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara), and after a little coaxing, his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) joins them. Against Cameron’s better judgment, the three drive his father’s prized Ferrari into the windy city of Chicago for a day of fine dining, baseball, museums, and spontaneous fun. Meanwhile, Ferris may have successfully fooled his parents into believing he’s deathly ill, but high school principal Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) and Ferris’s jealous sister Jeanie (Jennifer Grey) are not so easy. Intent on shattering his golden boy image, each one is hot on his trail, anxious to expose his web of deceit once and for all.

With a number of hilarious scenes, such as Cameron’s feeble attempt to reverse the mileage on his father’s Ferrari, the film earns its reputation as an elite classic of the 80’s, on par with hits like Back To The Future (1985), The Breakfast Club (1985), and Weird Science (1985). The film does have its off-the-wall moments, such as when Ferris takes over a parade and starts singing while thousands of spectators engage in synchronized dancing. You wouldn’t see such a sequence in a contemporary film, and like similar scenes from The Blues Brothers, it tends to date the film. But the strength of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is not its timeless humor, but the likeability of Ferris Bueller himself. Ferris is a cool guy. He doesn’t put anyone down, but only looks for the best in people. More importantly, he manipulates his parents into thinking he’s the perfect embodiment of innocence while he skips school and goes joyriding! Every child of the 80’s wanted to be Ferris Bueller, and the wide appeal of his life philosophy is timeless, which is why the film continues to enjoy success with each new generation.

Further solidifying the movie’s status as a landmark of its decade is the soundtrack, which is certainly one of the more diverse and interesting of its time. Where else can you find The Beatles, Wayne Newton, the theme to Star Wars, and the 80’s classic ‘Oh Yeah’ by Yello all wrapped up into one movie which moves seamlessly from one scene to the next? Throw in a few future Hollywood stars in Kristy Swanson, Ben Stein, and Charlie Sheen (who stayed awake for over two days so he could achieve the desired drugged out expression for his character), and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off transforms into the quintessential cult classic. Even after two decades, this film is just as entertaining as when it first premiered.

Felicity (DVD) Review

Nominated for 2 Emmys and 2 Golden Globes, including Best TV Series - Drama, Felicity gathered a large cult following in its short four season stint. Premiering on the WB network in September 1998, the show (along with Dawson's Creek) helped ignite a firestorm of highly successful original series on behalf of the upstart network, with such hit shows as Angel (1999), Gilmore Girls (2000), and Smallville (2001). The brainchild of writer J.J. Abrams (creator of the two hit series Alias and Lost), Felicity follows the life of a recent high school graduate, not through seasons 1, 2, 3, and 4, but through Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. Similar in genre to its contemporary, Dawson's Creek, Felicity's cast is of approximately the same age, but the setting is college instead of high school…

Felicity begins when the star of the series, Felicity Porter (Keri Russell), graduates from high school. Having harbored a four-year crush on classmate Ben Covington (Scott Speedman), despite the fact they've never talked, Felicity musters the courage in the aftermath of their commencement ceremony to ask him to sign her yearbook. When Ben writes some surprising comments, Felicity decides to follow him to fictional University of New York (UNY) instead of pursuing her goal of pre-med at Stanford. Against her parent's wishes, she enrolls in the school and moves cross country where she becomes roommates with Meghan Rotundi (Amanda Foreman), a girl whose lifestyle clashes with her own, and where she meets resident advisor Noel Crane (Scott Foley) who immediately develops a crush on her. When Ben learns of the true reason for Felicity's enrollment, he's both flattered and a little uncertain about Felicity's mental stability. In the ensuing four years, Felicity goes through the basic trials and travails of a maturing college student, experiencing the ups and downs of life, love, and adulthood…

The Felicity DVD features a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere in which Felicity makes the big move to UNY. While there, she meets her new roommate and the resident advisor Noel Crane. She also makes quick friends with aspiring musician Julie. After telling Ben of her true motivations for attending UNY, he's apprehensive about starting a relationship, and Felicity announces that she'd just like to be friends. However, she gets jealous when she finds Ben and Julie together. Meanwhile, Felicity takes advantage of her job with the college and reads Ben's entrance essay, an inspirational piece about his dead brother. But she later learns that Ben has no brother at all… Other notable episodes from Season 1 include "Thanksgiving" in which Felicity cancels her plans to return home for Thanksgiving in order to stay with Julie so that she will not be alone, and "Assassins" in which Noel and Felicity break off their relationship after each learns of the other's unforgivable actions…

Having first aired after the 1999 Super Bowl, Family Guy really hit its stride via cable re-runs and DVD sales (prompting Fox to announce the launch of Season 4 in May 2005, following the show's original cancellation following Season 3). An animated series building a similar cult following to The Simpsons and Futurama, Family Guy employs its own unique brand of humor distinct to its other animated peers…

Everybody Loves Raymond (DVD) Review

First telecast in the Fall of 1996, Everybody Loves Raymond became an instant favorite among TV audiences, a love affair that would last for nine memorable seasons. Following on the heels of a series of successful sitcoms starring stand-up comics - Seinfeld, Home Improvement, The Drew Carey Show, etc., Everybody Loves Raymond drew upon the comedic talents of Ray Romano who plays the role of the title character Ray Barone…

A successful Long Island-based sportswriter, Ray and his wife Debra (Patricia Heaton) enjoy a happy marriage and the company of their three children - daughter Ally (Madylin Sweeten) and twin sons Geoffrey (Sawyer Sweeten) and Michael (Sullivan Sweeten). But they also happen to live directly across the street from Ray's parents, Frank (Peter Boyle) and Marie (Doris Roberts), who take it upon themselves to enter their son and daughter-in-law's house whenever they wish (without knocking) and dispense advice and sometimes insults. Joining Frank and Marie is Ray's brother Robert (Brad Garrett), a divorced policeman, who periodically lives with Frank and Marie and is often jealous of Ray's idyllic life. Together, they create the perfect loving and dysfunctional family…

ER (DVD) Review

Nominated for 25 Golden Globes and 110 Emmys, including 7 for Outstanding Drama Series, ER has long been one of the best prime-time shows on television. Premiering in September 1994 on NBC, the hour-long hospital drama vividly illustrates the intensity and fast-paced stress endemic to hospital emergency rooms across America. Brought into being by Michael Crichton - famous Hollywood insider, novelist, and brains behind such films as Jurassic Park, Twister, and Timeline - ER fulfills its creator's ultimate vision (it took over a decade of pitching the show before network executives bit) for a close-to-life glimpse of the technology and the humanity omnipresent in the ER. Since its inception, many cast members have passed through the halls of ER, many of them having gone on to become big stars in Hollywood…

ER follows the exploits of a group of emergency room staff who work in a busy Chicago hospital. The show attempts to examine every detail of the ER experience. From the exhilaration of saving a life to the tedium caused by mountains of paperwork, all the highs and lows are covered. In the show's first year, a number of regular faces staffed the ER. Doctors Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards), Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle), Douglas Ross (George Clooney), and Susan Lewis (Sherri Stringfield) were regulars in the ER along with Head Nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) and Benton's medical student understudy (and later ER doctor), John Carter (Noah Wyle)… Any given episode tends to run multiple plot lines throughout the show, interweaving scenes in short snippets intended to heighten audience emotion and create the aura of a stress-laden atmosphere. The show's high drama, coupled with subplots of the staffers' personal lives and the display of cutting edge medical technology, combine to make ER one of most adrenaline-inducing programs in television history…

The ER DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the series premiere "24 Hours" in which a long day in the ER is made longer when multiple casualties pour through the doors following the collapse of a building and medical students report for training (marking the first appearance for John Carter's character). Meanwhile, Dr. Benton performs a heart surgery normally reserved only for senior staff members while the staff is struck with a personal tragedy when Head Nurse Carol Hathaway is brought in following a suicide attempt… Other notable episodes from Season 1 include "Blizzard" in which a major snowstorm first leads to an empty ER and then (following a 40-car pileup) one with overflowing capacity, and "House of Cards" in which, while trying to keep up with Carter, Deb nearly causes a patient's death…

Elf (DVD) Review

Buddy (Will Ferrell) is an oversized elf working away at the North Pole. Always wearing a smile, he dwarfs his comrades and never seems able to find his niche in the toy-making arena. Eventually, Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) is forced to reveal the truth to Buddy. He's actually a human. He's not really an elf at all. The elves love buddy just the same, but Buddy feels the need to strike out on his own and try to find himself - and maybe even his family too…

Scouring the streets of New York City, Buddy must learn the urban rules of life. In due time, he manages to track down his biological father, a successful publishing executive named Walter (James Caan). But despite the prodding of his wife Emily (Mary Steenburgen), Walter is reluctant to start a relationship with the over-eager grown-up child…

In the meantime, Buddy spends his days working at Gimbel's department store where he stars as a department store Santa's elf and a Christmas season decorator, creating a magical wonderland that thrills customers and employees alike. Striking up a relationship with fellow employee Jovie (Zooey Deschanel), Buddy's life is slowly transitioning from elf to human… But will he be able to survive in the big city? Will he be able to rekindle a relationship with his father? Elf thoroughly entertains us while we find out…

With a great cast of writers, Elf manages to keep the laughs rolling throughout the entirety of the film. Although lacking in some areas (it's not one of the greatest comedies of all-time), Elf is a hilarious movie in its own right. Will Ferrell turns in an amazing performance as Buddy. Like Tom Hanks in Big, he's actually believable as the innocent man-child roaming the streets of New York City. It's this farcical innocence that provides Elf with the charm necessary to keep the audience involved in the story beginning to end. Because of its laugh factor, and the surprisingly small number of decent Christmas-themed movies, Elf is a definite must-see film… Check it out this Christmas!

DVD Review: The Simpsons Movie

Those yellow, animated phenomenons have finally made their way to the big screen and it only took eighteen years. So does the animated movie live up to the hilarity of the television show? Read on and find out – doh!
The town of Sprinmovie, film, review, tv, media, art, gfield’s lake is overly polluted and socially conscious Lisa Simpson (Yeardley Smith) rallies the town to clean it up. Her dad Homer (Dan Castellaneta) saves a pig from being slaughtered after it’s used as a prop in a Krusty the Clown commercial and starts to treat it like the son he always wanted.

This doesn’t set well with Bart (Nancy Cartwright) who finds that Mr. Flanders (Harry Shearer) is a more caring father than his pig loving one. Homer’s new oinking child does what pig’s do and Homer puts the results in a huge silo in the backyard (well, Homer did put a little of himself into the job). His wife Marge (Julie Kavner) tells him to get rid of the silo of pig waste.

Homer does of course, by dumping it on Lake Springfield. This infusion of pollution causes the Environmental Protection Agency to become alerted to the situation. They react in their usual restrained manner – the director Russ Cargill (Albert Brooks) orders that a huge glass dome cover the town.
The Simpsons eventually find themselves outside the dome and Homer decides to take off rather than help his neighbors (especially since they formed an angry mob against him when they found out that it was his silo that pushed the lake over the limit). He takes the family to Alaska and start over again, but the rest of the family thinks they should return and save Springfield.

The Simpsons have been a television hit since they started airing in 1989. There’s always been talk that creator Matt Groening should bring his jaundiced creations to the big screen. He’s seemingly been happy on the small screen but it has finally come to pass and the results are hilarious.
The film does play like a bigger and extended episode of the television show. It has some hilarious commentary on society as well as just outright wacky comedy. One bit of commentary has the church folk running to Moe’s bar and the bar patrons running to church as the giant dome of doom is placed over the town.

We also have an extended Bart dare as he skateboards in the buff down to the Krusty Burger. Not to mention the “Spider Pig” song that my kids would sing during the theatrical trailer.

Where this disc lets down a little is not in the content of the film but in the special feature department. It feels really rather light and you keep thinking that a more expansive special edition will be in the works somewhere down the line – doh!.

The Simpsons is presented in anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) and is enhanced for 16x9 televisions. A fullscreen version is available separately. Special features include two commentary tracks.

The first one features writer/creator Matt Groening, writer/producer James L. Brooks, writer/producer Al Jean, writer/producer Mike Scully, director David Silverman, Yeardley Smith, and Dan Castellaneta, and the second one includes director Silverman, and sequence directors Mike B. Anderson, Steven Dean Moore and Rich Moore.

There are 5 minutes of deleted scenes introduced by Al Jean. The “Special Stuff” section has 3 minutes of Simpsons appearances on the Tonight Show, American Idol, and a parody of the “Let’s go to the Lobby” concession stand spiel. That’s it. Seems pretty light to me.

The movie is hilarious, but the extra features feel like a bit of a letdown as far as deleted scenes go, the commentaries are top notch. It’s well worth it for the film. I must knock it down a bit because it could’ve been a bigger set (and I suspect will be somewhere down the line).
